IT WAS SEPT. 1st .. when radio station CKNW officially signed on, with 250 watts on 1230 KHz, some two decades after AM radio had begun on the lower mainland… When CFRB Toronto moved to 1010 KHz as Canada’s first 50,000 watt radio station …. When colour television officially arrived in Canada, courtesy of CTV …. ..and when the last episode of “I Dream of Jeannie” aired on NBC-TV, after a 5-year run. IT WAS AUG. 31st .. when the first news program on radio was aired in Detroit, when election returns were broadcast on 8MK, (later to become WWJ), owned by the Detroit Evening News. Only some 30 homes in the city were equipped with radio receivers… When “The Great Gildersleeve”, a spin-off of the longtime laughfest “Fibber McGee and Molly,” began its two-decade run on NBC Radio’s Red Network… When “The Adventures of Superman” started on network radio on the Mutual Broadcasting System, quickly becoming one of the era’s most iconic series… ..and when “The Partridge Family” TV show aired its last episode, leaving David Cassidy free to pursue a solo music career. IT WAS AUG. 30th .. when, as the TV era kicked into high gear, "Screen Directors Playhouse" ended its 2.5 year run on NBC Radio... When "American Bandstand" aired for the final time as a daily show on ABC-TV, becoming a weekly hour on Saturdays for another 26 years... When, after five years, ABC-TV's "The Brady Bunch" came to an end ... ..and when the "Late Show with David Letterman" debuted on CBS-TV, with guests Bill Murray & Billy Joel. IT WAS AUG. 29th .. when Calgary’s CFAC, the radio station of the Calgary Daily Herald, had its official opening at 7:45 p.m. with a concert by the Salvation Army Band… When the summertime replacement show Paul Whiteman Presents, with hostess Dinah Shore, was heard on NBC radio for the last time.. When Calgary got its first FM station CHFM-FM, at 95.9 MHz. It is currently branded as KiSS 95.9… .. and when the 120th and final episode of the ratings sensation The Fugitive aired, attracting the largest TV audience ever to that point. IT WAS AUG. 28th .. when U.S. radio’s first commercial was heard on WEAF in New York, as announcer H.M. Blackwell touted Hawthorne Court, a group of apartment buildings in Queens. The realty company had bought 10 minutes of commercial air time for $100… When 16 years after leaving the air Canada’s Happy Gang musical troupe reunited for two sold out reunion concerts at Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition… When the 40th Annual Emmy Awards gave top honors to 30something, The Wonder Years and Richard Kiley… ..and when The Jamie Foxx Show began its 4-and-a-half-year run on the WB network. IT WAS AUG. 27th … when CBLT Toronto moved down the dial from Channel 9 to Channel 6… When the country program that had first showcased the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Johnny Horton and Lefty Frizell, ‘Louisiana Hayride,’ aired for the last time on KWKH/1130 AM in Shreveport… When singer Connie Francis signed in as the celebrity mystery guest on CBS-TV’s panel show ‘What’s My Line?’… ..and when Diane Sawyer became the fifth reporter on the top-rated TV newsmagazine, ’60 Minutes,’ alongside (pictured) Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Harry Reasoner and Ed Bradley. IT WAS AUG. 26th … when pioneer Calgary radio station CHCQ became CFAC, its third set of new call letters in three months… When Ted Rogers Sr. manufactured the world’s first commercial AC (alternating current) radio tube… When the radio program “Arch Oboler’s Plays” featured the NBC Symphony as the musical backdrop for the drama, “This Lonely Heart”…. ..and when Red Barber (pictured) announced the first televised baseball games — on experimental TV station W2XBS in New York, the predecessor to WNBC. IT WAS AUG. 25th .. when ‘Father Knows Best’ starring Robert Young began its 4-year run on NBC Radio… When the TV game show “Concentration” with Hugh Downs (pictured) aired for the first time on NBC… When the 43rd Emmy Awards gave their top trophies to LA Law, Cheers, Kirstie Alley and Patricia Wettig… ..and when the CRTC approved CHUB Nanaimo to move from 1570 KHz to 102.3 MHz, CHPQ Parksville from 1370 KHz to 99.9 MHz, and CKEG Nanaimo from 1350 KHz to 1570 KHz. IT WAS AUG. 24th .. when the CBC’s CBX AM1010 signed on with 50,000 watts at Lacombe Alberta, in an ultimately failed attempt to serve both Edmonton and Calgary with one transmitter … When Montreal-born William Shatner appeared for the first time on the cover of TV Guide, with fellow Star Trek actors Deforest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy … When a spinoff of the sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes,” “The Facts of Life” debuted on NBC-TV, starting a nine year run…. ..and when NBC TV’s Jay Leno was the host as Microsoft officially rolled out their Windows 95 operating system in the Seattle suburb of Redmond. IT WAS AUG. 23rd …when singers Billy Jones and Ernie Hare, “The Happiness Boys”, first appeared on New York’s WEAF radio, sponsored by Happiness Candy stores.,, When the BBC’s experimental TV service featured the first televised boxing match between Archie Sexton and Laurie Raiteri, almost 15 years before the TV era began … When Seattle radio station KKND “The End” FM 107.7 was born, billing its music as “The Cutting Edge of Rock.” The format helped give birth to Seattle’s famed Grunge movement… ..and when Richard Hatch was revealed as the winning castaway on the first season of CBS’ “Survivor.” ALL the milestones for Aug. 23rd INSIDE!
