SCENE & HEARD: Barry Macdonald returned to the airwaves with TSN 1040 this week for the first time in over a month. He should know two things: (1) He was missed by his listeners concerned about his whereabouts and well-being judging by the flood of texts and emails received at Dr. Sport headquarters and, more importantly, (2) Baseball’s all-time greatest catcher Johnny Bench was disappointed he didn’t get to meet B-Mac during his August 30 Superstar Series visit to Nat Bailey Stadium.

“Barry interviewed me prior to coming to Vancouver and he was one of the most informed radio or television guys I’ve ever talked to,” Bench said to a private, pre-game audience in Andy Dunn’s presidential cubbyhole in the depths of the prettiest little ball park in captivity. “Tell him that he can call me anytime.”

Macdonald talked on air Tuesday about the “darkness of depression that scares the hell out of me.” With the compassionate urging of co-host and friend Don Taylor, Macdonald shared with his afternoon radio audience his bouts with depression in 1979, 1986, 2004 and this past September. “I’m not ashamed,” he said. “Depression is an unwelcome visitor in my life. If me talking about it today can help one person who suffers from depression, then it is worthwhile. My advice is to turn to someone you can trust and don’t be paralyzed by fear. Don’t be alone.”

Welcome back B-Mac. Now you know, even baseball’s legendary Johnny Bench noted your absence. You, my friend, will never be alone.
