The Tony-winning actor also appeared in such films as ‘Tin Men,’ ‘Moonstruck’ and ‘Eight Men Out.’
John Mahoney, best known as Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce’s irascible dad, Martin Crane, on Frasier, has died. He was 77.
An Englishman, Mahoney died Sunday in his adopted hometown of Chicago, publicist Paul Martino told The Hollywood Reporter.
Playing a curmudgeonly retired cop, Mahoney received two supporting actor Emmy nominations for his work on the 1993-2004 NBC hit.
A former Midwestern medical-magazine editor who quit his day job at nearly 40 to study acting in Chicago, Mahoney had taught English at Western Illinois University in the early 1970s.
He became a fixture at Chicago’s fabled Steppenwolf Theatre and soon ventured to the New York stage. He distinguished himself in an off-Broadway production of Orphans, for which he received a Theatre World Award.

One of the funniest men that was part of a fantastic cast. Frasier worked at every level and Martin Crane was as believable as any sitcom actor I’ve ever watched. One of my favorite episodes had Martin walk into the apartment and into the middle of chaos where everyone was telling lies to protect one another from an old boy friend of Daphne’s. When boy friend asked Martin what he did for a living Martin calmly told the biggest lie yet. “I’m a retired astronaut”.
RIP sir .
Sad,will miss him,had a great career RIP.
Did not see the show a lot but they had a great cast.
I hope he was as nice as he appeared to be.
RIP
About two months back I just finished bing watching the entire 11 seasons of Frasier. I was genuinely entertained and laughed out loud many many times. Great show.
One must remember that show came out in 1993 and Mahoney was only in his early 50’s portraying a much older man. The cane the limp and the old chair helped sell it, but I thought he was in his late 60’s on the show. I was surprised to hear he was only 77 when he died. His dog stole the show on many episodes. My next dog is gonna be named Eddie.
