Former Vancouver broadcaster Peter Jackson died March 7th in Victoria at age 80. PJ the DJ entertained at C-FUN Vancouver in 1957 before moving to CKY Winnipeg and then returning to Vancouver at CKLG in the early 1960s. After hosting a show at CKXL Calgary in the mid 1960s, he moved to sales at CKWX Vancouver, before building a successful career in real estate. A celebration of life is scheduled at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel on Sunday, May 28th.

Peter passed away peacefully on March 7th in Victoria, BC. Born in Hong Kong, Peter’s family moved to Canada and settled in West Vancouver where Peter was raised. After graduation, he began a successful career in radio broadcasting, moving to Winnipeg in the 60’s where he achieved fame as PJ the DJ.
Peter returned to Vancouver in the early 70’s and settled in Deep Cove. He partnered in a broadcasting school and later, built a successful career in real estate. Peter loved travel, cars, meeting people and driving. He fell in love with Mexico and spent winters in Todos Santos on the Baja and later in San Jose Del Cabo. Peter was the life and soul of dinner parties where he entertained with tongue-in-cheek tall tales and true life stories. He loved making people laugh and is fondly remembered by many friends and family members, too numerous to mention.
He is survived by his wife Jiehua Morrow, her son Ben, his first wife Diane and their son Peter Jr. and his spouse, Darlene. He is predeceased by his previous wife Nori.
A celebration of life is to be held at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel on Sunday, May 28th from 2:30 PM – 3:45 PM at Parking Lot # 6, off Ring Road, 3800 Finnery Road, Victoria, BC, V8W 2Y2. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a favourite charity.

I remember Peter very well. As a kid I listended to him on CKY when we would spend summers at Kenosee Lake SK. KY was the best radio around in the late 50’s and 60’s as PJ worked with many others like Jack Wells. I went on to get in the radio biz too and ended up owning Soo Line Broadcasting, Weyburn & Estevan SK and was the play by play broadcaster for the Boston
Bruins in 1966-67, Bobby Orr’s first season in the NHL. I sold Soo Line and moved to Victoria in 2009. I wish I knew PJ was in Victoria, we would ahve enjoyed some “radio daze” visits.
In the 80’s or 90’s I was attending a Sask Broadcasters function and met Daryl Burliington ??? not certain of his last name but I think he was at CKY when PJ was there ?? If there are are any recordings of some kind of PJ’s old days radio on air around, I would love to receive or buy them.
I spend the winters in Palm Springs so will not be in Victoria for the service as I would love to attend. I thank my friend Ed Bain at the Q and CHEK for advising me of PJ’s passing – I gave Ed his first job in radio.

I remember PJ the DJ from the late 50’s. CKY was an AM station then, 580 on the dial. I was in high school in my home town , Cranberry Portage, Man. Everyone was buying small transistor radios and we could tune in CKY even though we were at least 700 km by air north of Winnipeg.
Sorry to hear of his passing. PJ the DJ. Brings back fond memories .
