Kiss FM….You know it is time to blow up your station and change formats when your AM sister station is beating you in the ratings. Sonic didn’t really make an impact, and Kiss is really no better. Get rid of Kid Carson, and bring on a format that Vancouver doesn’t currently have.We don’t need three top 40 stations in Vancouver essentially playing the same music. A station format targeting Gen X not playing the same 100 songs Jack plays would do much better. A good example is Hot 103.7 in Seattle. I hear this station all over the Vancouver, in stores on Robson, blaring out of car stereos, etc. And there is MINIMAL DJ chatter in the morning.Kid and company have run their course, Fun FM did just as well, so it is time to pull the plug.
Geez Louise would ya look at ‘NW!! The Top Dawg is coming to life again!! Could they be run by some sort of Evil Genius?
QM is right where it should be. Have you seen the new KISS ads! Attack the competition, very bad idea, will only hurt themselves, shooting themselves in the foot. Poor management has always been a cornerstone at Rogers in Vancouver. Kids contract may come up next year. Aging population, doesn’t surprise me that Rock 101 and NWs ratings are okay. The Peak is 13, how do they make any real money.
They have always been outrated by that AM station.
I’m really amazed that the traffic format on 730 has lasted almost 10 years. The two bottom stations were at one time the two heroes of Vancouver radio, now they are almost zeros. What a waste of two powerful frequencies. AM radio is almost dead I guess. And as for Sonic or Kiss or whatever 104.9 is called now,I agree with Jen. Change the format and get rid of Kid and co. Maybe try a format similar to Hot 103 or KUBE in Seattle. Virgin has the Top 40 format nailed down in Vancouver,104.9 will never win the battle.
A little surprised at NW bouncing back. I guess maybe it lost ground as last year after a few of their long time hosts left and the station was in flux. I guess Talk Radio listeners left to go to CBC One and some have come back to see if/what CKNW may be doing as CBC One lost as much as CKNW gained in the last 1/4. I guess we will see if CKNW can maintain this bounce back? I am not so fond of all to much fluff on CKNW and much of it is just CHEAP radio with hosts blah, blahing with various producers and over such often thin, vapid and trivia topics. Add the never ending replaying of stuff and such from one show to the next all day long. Plus NW on the weekends is a DUD nowadays, well I will reserve judgement. I still think CKNW will see it’s rating fall back down unless they get on board and stop with all too much fluff and repetitive crap.
As for all sports radio, at least out west it looks like the format is one where there is a stalling at low audiences. But of course once NHL hockey starts up, I bet for one in Vancouver TSN1040 ticks up. As for TSN 1410, why bother, except to sluff of other contracted play by play on when the big games are on 1040. Out in the valley here TSN 1410 barely comes in.
Traffic 730. MY GOD KILL IT, KILL IT NOW!
It’s a Summer trend every year for NW, they tick up before falling back in the Fall book.
Wonder if another country station could work in Vancouver.
I listen to CISL 650, as my clock radio is broken, and the only other music station I can get clearly is Jack FM and I can’t stand the music on that station. 650 must open up their music vault, how many times a day can they play Long May You Run?
Yes I see the irony of my name being CFRO man and not listening to the station.
Why bother with TSN 1040? To hear Dan Patrick, of course: the best show on radio!
In respect of Hot 103.7 Seattle, or KUBE for that matter – in response to the comments above – their ratings are hardly sterling. Better to adopt the upbeat (verging on ‘dance radio’), huge playlist, half the commercials of any other station in the Seattle market, number one Seattle rater, Movin’ 92.5. Or KISS could move to an entirely different format, and get out of the pop rock rut. And, by the way, it’s 95.3 that’s really rockin’ in Vancouver, not so much 94.5 anymore.
Sonic/Kiss should change to old school R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop etc. At least it would be something you can’t hear on any other station. The top 40 or top 20 playlist is terrible.
Steve and Jen are right. Hot 103.7 is a good station, and plays daily at my workplace in Vancouver. Vancouver radio compared to 20 years ago is terrible. As a male in his mid 30 s, it is hard to find something besides say, Jack FM that is targeted to my generation. Rock 101 and LG are too old, Sonic (Kiss) and Virgin are. too young, and Z is actually pretty good but just not as good as it was in it’s heyday. At least Seattle radio has more variety. In this day and age, we have way more choice in radio listening than what is confined to the AM and FM band.As for Kid Carson, I think he is a great radio personality, just on a terrible teenybopper radio station. He would be good on an old school type format,ie.1990s 2000s R and B.
It’s more than obvious the success Kid had at The Beat was due to the brand and not necessarily Kid himself. The audience never shifted when he made the move and their numbers have never budged. Knowing Rogers they probably offered Kid big bucks to make the move. Worth it? After all this time I would say no. I would bet
yet another format change is no too far away.
Les H, your take on NW is one that many share. All the inhouse banter is borderline insulting to their audience. The top 5 news stories repeated at the start of every show is mind numbing.
