New documentary! CFNY-FM: Not Your Average Radio Clone. It’s a fun 22 minutes.
PSR thanks Alan Cross for posting this latest documenty about CFNY-FM Toronto. There aren’t a lot of radio stations that have inspired the same sort of devotion seen with CFNY-FM (now The Edge) in Toronto.
Karim Mosna, a 21 year old “self-professed radio junkie” interviewed David Marsden and a whack of other people from the The Spirit of Radio era at CFNY FM. It’s a fun 22 minutes.

I was addicted to this station back in the late 70s, early 80s. I actually used to go into withdrawal when I was out of their signal range. The announcers actually talked to the audience as opposed to shouting pre-prepared trivia tidbits about the artist or reciting concert listings. This station, as indicated in the documentary, was responsible for energizing the local music scene in a way that no other station ever was able to do. The listening audience was a cut above the competition and serious music lovers. The morning show with Pete and Geets could actually put callers live on the air without any 7 second delay and have an adult conversation, as opposed to the Q107 audience which called in to shout obscenities. If I remember correctly, CFNY was also a “Stairway to Heaven” free zone!
