The Mount Wilson tower site, home to at least ten Los Angeles radio station towers as well as all of the major L.A. television stations and critical fire and telecommunications towers, is in danger as the Eaton Fire is now burning a short distance from the transmitters and towers. The Eaton Fire started in the Los Angeles foothills and has yet to be brought under control. Broadcast engineers are at the site, and one told KNBC-TV that this is a threat that operators have prepared for as Mount Wilson has faced the risk of wildfires several times during the past several years.
Air turbulence has prevented fixed-wing aircraft from dropping fire retardant from tackling the fire from the sky, leaving the challenge to fire crews on the ground. So far, firefighters have also held back, hoping that the brush will burn off any fuel that could pose a risk to the Mount Wilson facilities. They have also been helped by slightly reduced winds.
