Canadian Radio News and Radio West’s Dan Sys dies at 72

My friend, Ted Wendland of Radio West just informed me his life-long radio friend Dan Sys passed away this morning at 72.

Dan Sys

Dan was a letter carrier, who had radio as his life-long hobby.

I met Dan back in 1968 when he came over to Victoria, and visited me while I was doing my on-air shift at CJVI. I remember he sat at the back of the control and with wide-eyes watched me while I was on the board doing ‘The Mighty Mike Easton Show’, which boomed into Vancouver. He was silent as a mouse, and only spoke when an hour had passed, saying he had to go, his folks were picking him up in front of the station at 817 Fort Street and going back to Vancouver.

Dan collected radio promotion material, station logos and other radio paraphernalia, including station music charts plus, he was also a DXer – He kept us radio folk posted on who won their new broadcast licenses all across the country….  Former radio man, Marty Forbes described Dan, as a ‘great radio encylopedia’….

Heartfelt Condolences to Desi, his family and all his friends.
