On August 15, Vancouver ‘s legendary radio station, 980 CKNW, turns 80!
CKNW is a powerhouse in the community and has been, and still is, a trusted voice in news and talk. It has had a major impact on British Columbia for the past eight decades and has shared it all with listeners – from the completion of the Trans-Canada highway, the launch of BC Ferries, Expo 86, the Winter Olympics, the 2011 Canucks riots, to major weather events, traffic issues and more.
On August 15, radio hosts, past and present, will be sharing their favourite memories on air.
A little history:
-signed on air on August 15, 1944, and was the first in the region to have hourly newscasts
-in 1947 it became the first in BC to broadcast 24 hours a day
-began airing Vancouver Canucks games in the 1970s
-legendary broadcaster, Jack Webster, hosted his own call-in show in the 1960s
-former BC Premier, Christy Clark, hosted a weekday talk show from 2007-2010
-other notable beloved hosts include Bill Good (26 years), Jon McComb (36 years), Bryan “Frosty” Forst (40 years)

Admittedly, it was an excellent station in the past, but no more. The days of Warren Barker, Jack Webster, Jack Cullen, and presenters who could speak proper English (John McKittrick), are long behind us.
CKNW used to be legendary when Frank Griffiths owned it.
After he passed it went downhill and continued downhill.
Very true.
No yawn here as I treasure the memories of the old NW. No one’s a bigger critic than me regarding its current content.

Why are 980 and 1130’s logos the same colour and design? Total brand confusion and incompetent branding.
