CRTC hearing could provide boost for campus and community radio stations

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is holding a three-week public hearing on Bill C-11, or the Online Streaming Act, starting Nov. 20.

The CRTC has proposed that online streaming services, like Netflix and Disney+, provide contributions to support Canadian and Indigenous programming. The results of this hearing and the future implementation of the Act could have a significant impact for people like Jesse Woodward, the executive director and station manager at radio station CHLY 101.7FM in Nanaimo.

“A lot of what came from Bill-C11 was further recognition of our sector and the contributions we make in regards to the media ecosystem in Canada,” said Woodward. “Further recognition of that and support for our sector is always something that we’re hoping to see.”
