In her inaugural NAB Show speech since becoming the first woman to chair the Federal Communications Commission, Jessica Rosenworcel urged broadcasters to lean into their unique position as a local medium that is trusted by consumers. Throughout a 45-minute “fireside chat” with NAB CEO Curtis LeGeyt, Rosenworcel returned repeatedly to the importance of localism in radio and TV. At the same time, she offered few glimpses into where she stands on key regulatory issues that impact broadcasters.
Prior to joining the FCC in 2012, Rosenworcel worked as a senior communications counsel for the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee where she earned a reputation for getting things done. But with a still-deadlocked Commission made up of two Democrats and two Republicans, she expressed frustration with her limited ability to accomplish the Commission’s work. “We’ve got to figure out how to work together, or we don’t get anything done. And I wake up every day with that front of mind,” she said in a convivial chat that showed the strong rapport she and LeGeyt have forged, after earlier working together on Capitol Hill.
