According to the Recent News page at Gord Lansdell’s Northwest Broadcasters, retired local broadcaster Bob Brown has died from cancer.
He began his radio career hosting a weekly jazz show at CHFM-FM Calgary in 1965, later working at CKDA and CFAX Victoria and at C-ISL Vancouver in the 1970s and early ’80s. He then hosted p.m. drive, Swingin’ On A Star and That’s Entertainment at Fraser Valley stations Star-FM CFSR-FM/CKSR-FM Abbotsford/Chilliwack during the 1980s and ’90s.
Friend and Star-FM colleague John Oliver says he did fantastic reports each summer from the Abbotsford Airshow and calls him “one of the funniest and dry wits”.
If memory serves, “Commander Bob” (as the late Rick Honey affectionately dubbed him) spent the last year of his Star-FM tenyur doing traffic for both that station as well as Radio Max. I always thought that was a strange fit, considering the man’s past experience, but I gather there were contractual obligations to fulfil. RIP.
