  • A new report from NIELSEN, primarily focused on TV and new media, has found good news and bad news for radio’s listenership.

NIELSEN’s “Total Audience Report, December 2014” found that radio’s overall number of 2+ users was up to 258,734,000 in Q3 2014 versus 257,420,000 in Q3 2013. TSL, however, was down to 58:53 in Q3 2014 from 60:42 in Q3 2013.

From smartphones to tablets and even the latest generation gaming consoles, today’s technology is changing rapidly. According to the report, this fragmentation doesn’t apply just to technology; consumers’ viewing and listening habits are following suit. The recent proliferation of new devices allows consumers to connect with content anytime and anywhere. TV is affected the most, as what used to be a schedule to watch programming now seems like little more than a suggestion, as viewers can choose to watch live linear programming, video on-demand, or through subscription services and apps, among other ways to tune in.

“Content is still king, but consumers are shaping their own content-discovery experience, and the evolving media landscape has not lessened consumer demand for quality, professionally-produced content. What has changed is the number and reliability of new media available to viewers,” said SVP/Insights DOUNIA TURRILL.

    Other Notable Findings:

    • NIELSEN noted the growth in number of users was consistent across African-Americans and Hispanics.
    • NIELSEN found the drop in TSL was consistent across African-Americans and Hispanics.
