The annual Radio Show, scheduled for September in Nashville, will not be held as planned. In a joint announcement, the National Association of Broadcasters and Radio Advertising Bureau say the trade groups will instead produce a digital event that will incorporate “the best of what the Radio Show has to offer.” The NAB earlier cancelled the spring NAB Show in Las Vegas.
“Just as you put your listeners’ interests first, your wellbeing is our top priority,” said the letter from NAB President Gordon Smith and RAB President Erica Farber. “With that in mind and considering the circumstances of the ongoing pandemic, we have decided not to move forward with the 2020 Radio Show in Nashville as previously scheduled for September 13-16.”
The Radio Show Steering Committee will instead focus its energies in the coming weeks on a virtual event similar to the online NAB Show Express the NAB organized for last month to replace the Las Vegas conference. That replacement was deemed a success after it was attended by an estimated 40,000 industry professionals. While the number is less than half the announced attendance of 91,460 for 2019’s face-to-face event, its success already has the trade group thinking about how live and digital events can complement each other in the future.
“We are committed to providing an alternative solution that will provide meaningful engagement, thought leadership, networking opportunities and insights to drive our industry forward,” said Smith and Farber. “The Radio Show is as much yours as it is ours, and we look forward to your input, collaboration and participation in developing the online event, the dates for which will be announced in the coming weeks.”
