WINNIPEG, Tuesday, October 8, 2024 – At 12:01 a.m. CT, Corus’ beloved Power 97 was reborn as Power 97 Winnipeg’s Iconic Alternative. For the first time in Winnipeg listeners will finally have a station playing the greatest New Wave, Grunge, and Classic Alternative hits.
A blend of the best alternative music from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, the station will play 30 years of hits from artists such as the Foo Fighters, Tears For Fears, Green Day, Florence and the Machine, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Talking Heads, The Cure, David Bowie, The Killers, Blondie, Stone Temple Pilots and more.
“We are tremendously excited to re-imagine a legacy station like Power 97 with this unique and appealing format,” said Dustin Collins, Program Director at Corus Audio. “Iconic Alternative captures three decades of music that has been a formative soundtrack for the lives of many Winnipeggers, and I am stoked to be on this ride with listeners!”
Alan Cross, Canada’s “Icon of Alternative” will be an ambassador for the station, where his award-winning series, The Ongoing History of New Music, will air. Alan’s unmatched knowledge of Alternative music solidifies the station as a unique listening experience. Joining Alan will be Power 97’s new lineup of on-air talent – Power Mornings with Jay Richardson, Middays with Lex, Power Afternoons with Ed Garcia, and Evenings and Weekends with Fearless Fred.
Hockey fans will continue to have Power 97 as the FM home of the Winnipeg Jets with the regular season starting on October 9, 2024. For in-depth coverage including the pre- and post-game shows, listeners can tune in to our sister station 680 CJOB.
Power 97 Winnipeg’s Iconic Alternative joins Corus’ powerhouse collection of Alternative music stations Toronto’s 102.1 the Edge and Calgary’s Iconic Alternative 107.3 the Edge.

Just another kick in the can…a last ditch effort from a dying company. Corus can and should shutter the majority of its music stations in markets overloaded with similar formats and the giddy “guy-girl” teams which are indistinguishable from each other. But then, you wouldn’t want to burst Dustin Collin’s balloon because he’s “stoked” to be along for the ride.
