There appear to have been significant layoffs Tuesday in the Radio NL newsroom.
Reporters came in to work Tuesday morning to learn their jobs with the Stingray Media-owned station had been terminated. Castanet has learned multiple reporters are among those who have been laid off.
Radio NL news director Paul James told Castanet that NL will be maintaining a newsroom, but the station will transition “to a music format.” He said a statement is forthcoming from the company.
Radio NL traces its roots to 1970, when it was founded by John Skelly.
The station remained independent until 2017, when it sold to Newcap Radio. The following year, NL was sold to Montreal-based Stingray Digital Group.
This story will be updated when more information becomes known.

Members of the newsroom at RadioNL in Kamloops were let go Tuesday, according to a social media post by Brett Mineer, host of NL Newsday.
“Well — the entire newsroom has been terminated so — ya,” the longtime journalist posted on X shortly before 10:30 a.m.
B.C. Premier David Eby posted a response on X saying the decision by RadioNL owners Stingray Group is “just bad for local journalism.”

I’m afraid these News/Talk stations are past their prime. Sure, they might add some local context but the presentation is just soooo boring. Give me a quick, entertaining News hit any time. Our lives are moving too fast to listen to some ill-prepared host droning on.
Times, tunes and temperatures, that’s the radio I grew up with. Kinda fits with today’s short attention spells…
Never was a fan of talk/call in shows, always the same people, same rants, same raves…
Local items like traffic are getting harder to find with the increase in pre-recorded/simulcasting…
How long before it all goes to 1 nationally paid for propaganda arm off the government???
