Ten federal agencies last year paid a national broker almost $577,000 to distribute newspaper stories ghostwritten by government employees. The payments came as Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly lamented “fake news” in Canada. Joly’s office yesterday did not comment.

All they are doing is what the pharmaceutical companies, the oil companies, the big chemical companies, the chambers of commerce of various tourist locales and the fisheries industries have been doing for years. The only difference is that the Feds and other levels of government have to make the expenditures public. Your “news” – that ridiculous 60 minute parade of events that the stations air at 6PM is made up mostly of these news releases and staged press conferences. Very little of what you see is spontaneous and researched news reporting.
