Sims, who turns 63 this month, told Mariners beat reporter Greg Johns he plans to be ready for spring training and that his “pathology reports are all clean.”
The cancer was detected after Sims went in for a physical before Thanksgiving. It showed abnormal levels for a prostate-specific antigen. After follow-up tests, his prostate was removed.
The longtime broadcaster is currently at home in Manhattan, rehabbing and resting. He has served the past nine years as the Mariners’ television play-by-play man.
Pitchers and catchers report to spring training Feb. 19. After the initial scare jarred him, Sims said he’ll be ready to call games again for ROOT Sports when Cactus League play starts in March.
“Leading up to the week before my surgery, I’d wake up in a cold sweat at 4:30 in the morning,” he said. “I know I’m not going to live forever, but holy cow. This is happening to me? I’ll be the happiest son of a gun in Arizona when I get down there.”
