RIP Merv Meadows, formerly of CKWX

Longtime CKWXer Jim Morrison passed on the news:

I have the sad duty to report that our friend and colleague Merv Meadows passed away last weekend at his home in Saanich.

He was truly a one-of-a-kind guy, who lived life on his terms. After his broadcast career in the 1960’s and early 70’s he went into the Canadian Diplomatic Corps., serving at embassies and such in New York, Moscow and Copenhagen (with a few years in African countries beginning with “Z” along the way).

According to his daughter Kirsten, Merv died on his own terms as well, at home watching the hockey game last Saturday instead of hooked up to tubes and machines in a hospital. Apparently he had pneumonia and was “not taking the best care of himself”..

There will be a memorial thing at Arlington, WA, where Kirsten lives, on Nov. 14.  We will post the details when we get them.

According to the Vancouver Broadcasters website (which supplied the vintage  photo), Merv began his radio career at CFPR Prince Rupert. He worked as News Director at CHFM-FM Calgary (1964-66), and was in news at CKWX Vancouver from 1966 to 73.  When his diplomatic career ended he retired to Saanichton B.C.
