Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network play-by-play voice and former ESPN anchor Charley Steiner hopped on Facebook today and ripped his former employer for the “mass executions” the company announced this week. ESPN president John Skipper confirmed the network started laying off employees, with some popular veteran employees already shown the door.
Steiner started anchoring SportsCenter on ESPN in 1988 and his run lasted over a decade before leaving to become the radio voice of the New York Yankees. His well-known “This is SportsCenter” ad (pictured) featured the network’s contingency plan in case Y2K destroyed the world as we know it. Steiner isn’t typically active on social media, but expressed his frustrations because of “the pain, anger, frustration, sadness and outrage” he feels after many of his former colleagues were let go.
“This week, many of the men and women who provided the foundation, balance, direction and creativity to this iconic franchise were called into someone’s office and occupationally and emotionally executed,” Steiner said. Check out the full message below:
