Veteran KGO/San Francisco mid-morning host Ronn Owens revealed to listeners on his Monday (8/25) show that he has Parkinson’s, a progressive degenerative disease of the central nervous system for which there is no known cure.
In a conversation with the San Francisco Chronicle’s David Weigand, Owens says he never talked about being diagnosed with Parkinson’s beyond family and a few close friends up until now because, “I could not stand the thought of people feeling sorry for me.
” He also told the newspaper he was was inspired to go public with the news after learning that the late Robin Williams also suffered from the disease. “I felt it was important to tell people that you can have it like I have for 12 1/2 years and not be severaly impacted [Owens is on medications to help control the disease’s symptoms].
It’s possible — and it’s not a death sentence.”
