SCENE & HEARD: Yet another piece has been whittled from the CKNW AM980 sports armour with the departure of Stu Walters (above). Just shy of making it 10 years with Corus Entertainment, Walters was given the old “we’re heading in another direction” spin by management last week. He’d been the station’s sports beat man, covering the Canucks, Lions and Whitecaps with bright pre-game and post-game coverage, including five solid years as a contributor to Dan Russell’s Sportstalk show. It didn’t take long for the 36-year-old Walters to rebound. After a quick coffee with Team 1040 program director Mike Wittingham and his assistant Trevor Martins, Walters will make his debut on the all-sports station Monday pinch-hitting for the vacationing Jake Edwards as co-host of the morning show with David Pratt.

From there, Walters will be doing midday updates and filling in wherever needed during the summer holiday season. “It’s a foot in the door,” Walters says. “I’ve already been welcomed by most of the on-air staff at 1040. I’ve worked with them and against them over the years. I feel good about this. I saw the writing on the wall at ‘NW.”

  1. A good move for a good on-air voice. That still leaves a few unemployed sportscaster types around town. Not sure what has become of Rick Quinton. And then there is Abbotsford Heat play-by-play voice Brandon Astle still hoping for a gig now that the AHL team has left town.
