This story is from the fall of 2015
That word just in. The switch came at 4 pm Tuesday.
People looking at the ratings have been asking how long Rogers would continue to allow 103.1 to bleed audience. I guess we now have some of the answer.
Some tiddly bits still need to be updated. While there are new branding statements including “KISS nation” the station website is still making reference to what the “JACK force” will be up to this weekend.
Here is the launch audio as posted on their website.
JACK’s last two songs were the song they started with 11 years ago, Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top, appropriately followed by Stampeders – Hit The Road Jack. The first song played on KiSS was Mark Ronson – Uptown Funk ft. Bruno Mars.
Your comments are as always welcome.

Well, after 10 years of Jack, they did give it a good try. One can see the target audience, mostly KOOL, and now with KISS playing CHR and with the Ocean, Rogers should own women 18 to 65 in the diary market, or at least that’s the plan, or is that hope?
Wow. I’ve listened to Jack for so many years everybody in my house called our radio the “JackTron 5000.” Jack always kinda reminded me of the old CKDA when I was growing up in Victoria and it is a shame that the format never really found terra firma locally.
Gonna toast a stiff gin and tonic to dear, old Jack tonight and maybe rock out to some Chilliwack and Def Leppard. Who’s in?
So long old friend.
Randi chase middays and she is from kiss Vancouver. So vtd midday. Blake and wylde in the evening from kiss Toronto. I think Vanessa was on kiss Vancouver. From the look of it there is no true local programming unless crash afternoons is local. Sad days but not a surprise
Forget this. I’m going back to the Q to get my rock fix.
Matt & Vanessa are local in Victoria, Soper is a great guy too
Local morning show?
The poster above mentioned CKDA. Reminds me of when Victoria was the home to two oldies stations in the early ’90s; Oldies 900 CJVI (which swapped frequencies with Camosun College’s 103.1 in August 2000), and CKDA Oldies 1200. Considering the demographic of Victoria, this latest format flip creates a hole in the market. Bell already has a stronghold in the 45+ demographic with CFAX. Why not rebrand Kool 107-3 to complement their AM counterpart?
So what about The Ocean? Do they keep playing Pitbull, Hozier, Ed Shearing blah blah blah or will they start bringing in some oldies, maybe even some 70’s stuff?
Mornings and Drive are local. Drive takes 103.1 BACK to Hot 103! whoa….circles man.
How can a station that JUST LAUNCHED call itself “Victoria’s #1 Hit Music Station”? The stupidity is only matched by how insulting this is to the audience. Being the second station into a market that already has the format (Kool) is rarely successful. And if the same lug heads who program Sonic in Vancouver are involved here, then this station is doomed.
Dave, saying you’re the “1# Hit Music Station” means you play the #1 HITS, not you’re number 1 in the market…
Drex, thanks for the love, always appreciated.
And as for people worried about local, don’t worry, we will be local and live 6a-6p. We just started, things will be put into place over time.
I’m looking forward to this opportunity.
All I can say is, poor Pat.
Love the new station!!!!!! It is now on all my presets!!!!!
Everyone at The Q must be laughing their asses off. They are the only game in town now doing what they do. It took over ten years for Rogers to finally run up the white flag of surrender.
I guess that move from HOT 103 to JACK wasn’t such a good move after all.
Why do you think JACK Victoria never really worked?
I stopped listening to JACK because they seemed to just play the same songs over and over again from a very small playlist. Especially for the 80s music – just the big hits from that era and never anything else from lesser known bands or b-sides. There were times I’d hear the same song from the 80s one day to the next, same time of day even. I also remember calling in to request a popular 80s song to only find out they didn’t have it in their catalogue.
Not exactly whatever, whenever.
Don’t mind the change but already tired of the songs being repeated multiple times a day!
10 years as Jack FM doesn’t qualify as a failure.10 years is a long time to have the same format.
True Jennifer if we look at “radio years” like “dog years”, yes 10 years is forever. Point is , JACK never really made a huge impact ratings wise. Why? What are your thoughts?
Time will tell on this one, can they catch Kool FM, probably not…… Will the Ocean change their format? The 100.3 the Q is sitting in a very good spot right now.
The Matrix movie came out in 1999. How does this relate to a hit music station in 2015? Sonically and brand wise, it makes absolutely no sense at all.
Wow, Hot 103 returns! It should have never left! I loved that station. As I got older Jack was ok, but the problem with Jack is they became stale and played the same old crap you hear everywhere. It was NOTHING like the launch or the first year when they played a HUGE variety and people actually loved it. Then they changed, smaller playlist, people got bored. The Jack FM fad is dying across N America.
The problem with Jack in Victoria is that there is a Jack in Vancouver. It’s crazy that Rogers couldn’t at least have two different names for two stations that are easily listenable in both cities. Now we have two Kiss stations launching at almost exactly the same time,in Victoria and Vancouver. Why did they need to change the name of Sonic 104.9??We need less corporate ownership in radio. No wonder the audiences are attracted to other mediums more and more each year. Absolutely no creativity.
Get Thomas.
“Anonymous” says ‘Get Thomas.’ Referring to Brad Thomas, former afternoon host at The Ocean? Nobody seems to know where he is right now.
For a communications/media company, I think a better PR job could have been done of building up KiSS and getting us interested before yanking the cord on Jack. The lack of notice makes this loyal listener feel dumped. The analogy they use is your favourite tv show being cancelled but shows are usually cancelled with a little notice. Having been dumped, I am not inclined to let them set me up with their (*&(*^ cousin – thanks, I’ll find my own new station (100.3Q are you available?)
Also, while Rogers may have botched the roll out the station sounds good so far. KOOL should be worried after they tanked in the latest ratings.
Soper: Who decides what songs are number 1? Answer; you do by how often you spin them.
You say that Monday is commercial free and then you make up for having no commercials by talking. Is this a radio station or a talk show? I hear the same songs on this station over and over, do you have a limited selection of music available? Personally, I want my Jack 103.1 back.
The Midday Show is a VT from Vancouver, so it’s almost local and live.
I guess we’ll see if that changes over time…
I miss Pat Thomas!!
Just got back from vacation….where has Pat Thomas gone?
To answer your question Sharon, Crash Davis told me a few minutes ago, Pat Thomas is still in the building, only doing news on their sister station Ocean 98.5. Adding, ‘There’s No news on KiSS.’
Stopped listening to Jack when I moved to Sooke. The only station I can get here is The Q. Is there away to get Kiss out here that I don’t know about.
Agree with BLT….TheQ boys must be “partying like its 1999″……We need another choice for oldies in this city. I’ve begun listening to CISL, just to hear some different songs.
No problem with the 103.1 format flip. They seem to be playing ALL the hits, some of which you won’t hear on KOOL-FM . They even throw some old school R&B into the mix. They’re basically a copy of the other Kisses..104.9 and 106.1.
